Yesterday, I had the privilege and the honor to emcee the opening of the new Metro A Line light rail extension from Glendora to Pomona.

If you’re local, you know what a big deal this is, and how much of a difference it’s going to make in the lives of tens of thousands of people who no longer have to endure the 60 or the 210 for their commute.

If you’re not local, you’re gonna have to trust me on this: it’s a big deal, a significant investment in our communities that will endure for generations.

And here is the absolute coolest thing about it: our light rail system in Los Angeles only exists because of my friend and mentor, George Takei.

[George] was appointed to the Board by Mayor Tom Bradley. The Board was comprised of an appointee from each of the five County Board of Supervisors, two appointees of the mayor of Los Angeles, and four appointees of the City Selection Committee representing the other municipalities within Los Angeles County contained in the District.

In 1978, Takei was elected Vice-President of the Board.

This Board was tasked with determining the future of passenger rail service, something that hadn’t existed in LA since the Pacific Red Cars were (in my opinion, tragically) decommissioned in 1961. As you can imagine, it faced intense opposition from the usual gang of idiots, so in 1978, when George was on filming Star Trek The Motion Picture, he left the set and went to the board meeting where he cast the deciding vote to approve light rail service for Angelenos.

Think about that for a second. Our entire Metro rail system, which now includes the longest route in the world at over 50 miles, would not exist without George. Never, ever, let them tell you one person can’t make a difference.

I didn’t know any of this until yesterday, so I dropped that story into my prepared remarks, as a way of honoring George’s legacy, Tom Bradley’s legacy, and to celebrate the way Star Trek and its fundamental message of humanist hope are woven throughout the entire Metro system. It was so lovely when all the people who were there cheered for him.

I made myself look like an adult, fooled everyone, and had an absolutely great time. On the train ride back from Pomona to Glendora, I mentioned to Anne that for as long as I can remember, whenever I finish a performance, the only thing I feel is relief; I have always struggled to find joy and satisfaction in a job well done. But yesterday, I felt good about myself. I felt like I wrote a good speech, delivered it well, hit the notes that everyone wanted me to hit, and I felt so happy and maybe even a little bit of pride.

That’s very new for me, and I hope it sticks around.

I posted updates all morning long on my Instagram stories. Behind the jump, I’ll repost all of that stuff, as well as my prepared remarks.

pxl_20250919_1555179256976278978491274163

Mom and dad cleaned up so we didn’t embarrass you in front of your friends.

Riding from Glendora station to Pomona station, I reflected on the role public transportation has played in my life.
I love this face I am making, while I process the reality that all these fancy people think I’m an adult.
I wasn’t in a good location to film this, but WOW was it beautiful.

Keeping things in chronological order, here are my prepared remarks:

Good morning! It’s a beautiful and historic day here in Pomona as we celebrate the official grand opening of the A Line Extension to Pomona!

I’m Wil Wheaton, and it is truly a pleasure to be your host for today’s celebration of this amazing accomplishment.

I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, and I grew up in a middle-class neighborhood in Sunland, before my family moved to La Crescenta in the 80s. When I started my family in the 90s, my wife and I moved to Arcadia, where we raised our children in the new millennium. I’ve seen a lot of things change in five decades. I am old enough to remember when the Valley was mostly farmland. I remember when the 210 was built (and stood in for all of our freeways on one of my favorite television shows, CHiPs.) I remember the 80s, when we had to stay indoors, because the air quality was so bad before the AQMD stepped in.

One thing that hasn’t changed, that has actually been a defining constant, is the love we all have for our city and our neighbors. Sure, we have our fun intra-community rivalries (818 for life!) but at the end of the day, we are all Angelenos who love our city of angels. Our Metro system is an expression of that love for our communities. Our Metro system connects us, brings our communities together, and serves the public good. It is an expression of our civic pride, yet another reason Los Angeles is such a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family.

But the biggest reason I love LA is our diversity. More people live in Los Angeles County than the total population of 13 states, and we score 95 on the 100 point diversity scale.

I grew up steeped in the culture and traditions that my neighbors brought with them when they came to LA, as well as the cultures and traditions that existed here before my ancestors arrived.

I love that I got to grow up experiencing food and music, fashion and traditions from all over the world, just by walking down the street. I love that I can hop on the metro and get a taco in Highland Park, spend the day at the Long Beach Aquarium, and finish the day at a Kings game. And I know I’m not alone because I see my fellow Angelenos on the train, often taking their families with them to do something that only happens in LA.

Whatever I want, whatever anyone wants, it’s here. Great food, performing arts, museums that are the envy of the world, and near perfect weather, every day, at our beaches and in our mountains. There is so much to do here, being bored is a choice.

In fact, LA is so special, the Angels, down in Orange County, insist we pretend they are from Los Angeles. Uh, you’re not. The only major league baseball team in Los Angeles is the World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

But I understand your envy, Anaheim. I really do. This is a great place to live. Oh, and Shohei Ohtani plays for our team, which is pretty great. I’d hate to be the team that couldn’t re-sign him!

One of my favorite local bands, Bad Religion, has a song called “You are the government” that reminds us that we, the people, get to decide what our communities look like. When I rode the A line to get here, and when I look around here this morning, I see, over and over again, the good we can do when we come together for the mutual benefit of our communities.

And in that spirit, before I bring up our first speaker, I want to take a moment to personally thank the regular citizens, community organizers, and elected officials who helped move this project through all its stages of planning and construction. I want to thank all the skilled tradespeople who worked so hard to build this line and this beautiful station that will now serve generations.

And finally, I want to thank my fellow Angelenos who love our city of immigrants, who are standing up right now to protect our friends and neighbors, our wonderfully diverse communities, and ensuring that wherever we go, from Pomona to Pasadena, from downtown to Long Beach, from Hollywood to Santa Monica, and all across the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys, we are all safe.

The people who worked so hard to bring this project to completion cut the ribbon, confetti canons went TO TOWN, and there was much rejoicing.

Then, there were tacos.

Every day is Taco Tuesday, when you believe in yourself

We followed our tacos with churros, as is traditional.

Then we rode the train back to Glendora.

Some final thoughts on a very special day.

It was a deeply meaningful honor and privilege to be invited by Metro to speak at this event, and to share my passion for my city, my neighbors, and our public services. It was an unexpected gift to learn that I’m a link in a chain that was originally forged by one of my favorite people. It was a tangible reminder of what we can do — what we must do — when we come together as citizens and choose to do big things.

The entire Metro system is free to ride this weekend, to celebrate this extension.

Cats are a complicated bunch. Even when it comes to their food they can be the pickest and most flippant beings on the planet, suddenly deciding that some part of their regular meal service no longer suits their desires, acting out in over the top ways to express their disdain. Which is not all too different from the story we have lined up for you today.

For the cat child in question seemingly got bored, but not off his food options, but of his pawrents, and took it upon himself to live the semi-stray life until he would meet the pawrent he actually wanted. Cue a series of attempted returns, cuddles and cute times until his new pawrent submitted to his decision and they began their lives together, albeit with more than a few complications along the way. This is the story of feline determination, proving that cats can never be stopped.

We're used to thinking it's us who adopt cats. We look for one in a shelter, we answer a call from a friend who found a stray kitten, or we suddenly realise the cat we see in front of us was sent by the elusive and meowsterious Cat Distribution System - and that means that we're now cat pawrents (congrats!). But sometimes, usually in the most unexpected of ways, the cat adopts us. The cat is the adopting side of the equation, and the human is officially being adopted into the open paws of their new feline family member.

Does that make sense? It does to people it happened to. Besides the hissterical story of the cat that adopted a couple you'll read right below, we asked around the I Can Has Cheezburger HQ if anyone's cat actually adopted them. The answers did not disappoint:

  1. "You know that one cat down at the office entrance? I literally took her to the vet yesterday because she wouldn't let me leave the office. She's in my home now. I think she adopted me through the vet I took her to."
  2. "One absolute unit, a complete chonker badonker, found his way into my living room. He's been there ever since. He seems to like me."
  3. "I honestly think my cat adopted me. I was in a bad place in my life, really needed some company, and then on a night walk, this little kitten walked towards me from a bush. I stopped, she put her paw on my shoe, like she was telling me 'It's okay, buddy'.  I took her inside, but she was the one who adopted me into her life."

Happy Caturday, online feline family! The long, lazy days of summer are finally drifting away, and the cool, crisp air of fall is rolling in. That means the days of cats sprawling like melted loaves in front of the fan are ending, and the season of blanket cuddles is back. There's nothing quite like the first chilly morning when your cat decides you're officially their heater again, curling up against you as if they never spent the last three months pretending you didn't exist.

And while the seasons change, one thing stays the same: cats are endlessly silly, endlessly lovable, and endlessly memeable. They knock things over with the precision of pawfessional chaos agents, they loaf in boxes they barely fit in (but somehow still do), and they still manage to look majestic through it all. Their antics are timeless - which is why cat memes never fail to brighten our weekends.

That's what Caturday Best is here for: to gather the funniest, most pawsitively purrfect cat memes the internet has coughed up this week. Because weekends are better with laughter, memes are better with cats, and fall is definitely better with a warm, purring loaf under the blanket.

Happy scrolling, happy cuddling, and happiest Caturday!

Every time we come across a story of a wild cat being rescued, the thing that we want more than anything is for that story to end with the cat being successfully released back into the wild - to live the kind of life that it is supposed to live. That is the best case scenario. As cute as they are, and as much as we would want to keep a couple as pets, we know that the best place for them is back in the wild.

Unfortunately, that doesn't always happen. Some cats go through such traumatic experiences that they change, they can't be released, simply because they won't survive out there on their own. Like the rescued bobcat who fell on its head as a kitten, or the rescued black panther who was rejected as a cub and got too sick to be released back into the wild, or the mountain lion who was injured and now couldn't take care of itself properly.

But when these kinds of things happen, that doesn't mean that these cats can't live happy lives anymore. We will help them, and we'll help them not only survive but thrive. We will help find them new purpose in their lives. The bobcat in this video is an amazing success story in our eyes. She may not be released into the wild on her own, but she is spending her life helping other bobcats in need learn what's necessary so that they could have the chance to do it.

We don't know if we have made it obvious from the things that we write all day every day for our jobs, but… we love cats. Like a lot. We love everything about them. And we pride ourselves on knowing the lingo of the cat world. We are proud that we know about what airplane ears are - it's when cats tuck their adorable little ears in opposite directions to listen to something. We are proud to know what purritos are - it's when you wrap your cat up in a blanket like a burrito. We are proud to know what Autodromkatzerl kittens are - it's newborn kittens whose tail sticks up like the contact pole on a bumper car.

And yet somehow, even with all of our expertise, we did not not realize that in the cat world, there is a term for cats that have meowjestic whiskers. More meowjestic than you have ever imagined. It's simple but accurate. They are called "fireworks".

When a cat chooses you to help them, there is no turning a blind eye. You help that feline friend whether you intend to adopt them or not. That's just the rules of the universe. Helping a cat is just something you need to do when you have been chosen. Take, for instance, this woman. She was simply trying to enjoy her usual morning run. While she was running, however, a kitten started running next to her. She hesitated to slow down, but the kitten was keeping up pace with her. So she stopped. She panicked at first and did not know what to do. She's never had to rescue a cat before! So she tried to continue her run and lose the little furry girl. However, on her way back the kitten caught up with her again and the woman knew what she had to do. She has no means to keep her currently, even though she would love to, but she knows she can help find this baby a safe and loving furever home. So she did just that!

As you can see, you can run as fast as you can, but you can't hide from the cat distribution system.

Mondays always hit hard when we, let's be real, most expect it to. Nobody ever fluffs their pillow on a Monday morning, wide-eyed and prepared to take the day as a triumph. Usually, we ask the gods of sleep to take us once more as our pets snuggle up beside us, pleading with us to stay under the warm covers. If we have to move, so do they, and any sleepy animal does not prefer that. Cats are no exception, and honestly, they probably would give us the Grumpy Cat face for the rest of the week (unless we get back in their good graces via Churu).

This is all to say that Mondays aren't really a day to look forward to. That is, unless you have some funny feline material to lift your spirits from the ground up. If you're in a deficit, there's no need to fear…

Even when you think all hope is lost and the rest of the week will turtle race it until Sunday, the faces of felines all around the world offer you an olive branch and let you time-travel to a happier state of mind.

Losing a cat is one of the deepest aches a pet owner can feel. When you've spent nearly two decades together, from chaotic 3 a.m. kitten zoomies to the quiet company of a grumpy old gentleman who prefers his naps alone, it's like losing a piece of your own history. Watching them age is both a privilege and a heartbreak, a reminder of how fleeting our time with them really is.

That's what makes places like Fundacja Azyl u Hani in Poland so extraordinary. This sanctuary cares for around 130 chronically ill cats (many living with conditions like FELV, FIV, or paralysis), offering them not just medical care, but dignity, comfort, and love in their final chapter. Instead of spending their last days in loneliness or uncertainty, these cats sunbathe together, curl up in soft piles, and live out their time surrounded by others just like them.

Fluff. Chaos. Drama! Our weekly cat newsletter has it all -  subscribe here.

Cats know the true meaning of TGIF. Thank God It's Feline time. After a long week of hoomans rushing out the door, clacking away on keyboards, and forgetting that laps are made for lounging, Furiday finally brings the purrfect change of pace.

When the workweek ends, cats get their favorite version of happy hour: extra snuggles, bonus play sessions, and their hoomans finally home to provide undivided attention. No more "just one more email" excuses. Now it's all about chin scratches, slow blinks, and cozy couch cuddles. For felines, Furiday is less about deadlines and more about the chance to curl up, stretch out, and revel in the joy of having their people close by.

Whether they're loafing across your laptop, purring in your lap, or sprawling dramatically across the couch, cats remind us how sweet it feels to slow down. So kick off your shoes, grab some snacks, and let your kitty show you how to celebrate the weekend right. Because when Furiday night rolls in, it's officially feline o'clock… and the only agenda is purrs and relaxation.

Gracie has been queen of the castle for four years. She gets porch time, catnip, scratchers, and plenty of play. Even after all that enrichment she sometimes drops a pointed meow that feels like a request for something extra. Her pawrent hears it and wonders what box is still unchecked on the enrichment bingo card.

Then came Jacks, the new neighbors' one-year-old. Window appointments became a nightly ritual. He meowed to be let out, she stood on the porch like a furry lighthouse, and they traded long looks and polite sniffs. Not wrestle buddies, more vibe buddies. Then the neighbors moved out overnight. Now the window is empty. Gracie sniffs the sill, perks at every creak, and looks deeply unimpressed by this plot twist.

Here's the fork in the catwalk. The pawrent feels fine as a one-cat household, yet Gracie clearly enjoyed having a nearby friend. Space exists, budget exists, and a tender gap sits where the window romance used to be. Would a second cat soothe that gap or crowd the throne. That's the purrspective to weigh, with Gracie's happiness at center stage.

Cats, do they even want to be rescued? This is the question that today's story holds within and it is a good question overall. Some stray cats actually have it pretty made in the shade. Sure they might not have a comfy bed to sleep in, or a hooman to attack whenever they are feeling spicy. But many of them do have hoomans who feed them on a pretty regular basis, plenty of interaction with other cats and animals to keep them entertained, not to mention all the trees they could want to climb.

So when a hooman comes across a stray, looking at it with pity, assuming it is lacking a life indoors, they might be rather wrong. Not that we have any idea how to tell if it is the case, well, other than the cat trying to escape. But what we can take away from this story is that sometimes a rescue is more about helping a cat in need than bringing home a cat child to cuddle with.

Every cat pawrent wants nothing more than to keep their beloved fur babies safe. We cat-proof balconies, double-check windows, keep toxic plants far away, and even walk with leashes if needed - all because our cats are family, and their safety comes before anything else. But life doesn't always play by our rules, and sometimes the unexpected can shake even the most careful of cat homes.

That's what happened to one devoted cat mama, whose kitchen fire could have ended in tragedy. But thanks to a quick-thinking neighbor who heard the alarm, the fire department was on the scene in time to rescue her beautiful void, Pan. Found trembling under a blanket, terrified of the noise, this sweet boy was whisked to safety, treated with care, and is now recovering by his mama's side - a true miracle in the midst of chaos.

Stories like these remind us that kindness toward animals doesn't stop at the walls of our own homes. We are beyond grateful for the people who act, who care, and who protect cats when they need it most. We're so happy Pan is safe and thriving after such a frightening ordeal, and we wish him and his mama nothing but love, comfort, and a permanent place to call home again soon.

Well, you've made it. Another week of endless emails, surprise meetings that could've been Slack messages, and bosses who seem to have graduated top of their class in "How to Test Your Patience 101". You tried to keep it cool, you tried to stay calm, but by Friday, the cracks start to show. And when that happens, there's only one solution: pspsps some feisty feline energy into your day.

Because cats get it. They don't hide their cattitude. They hiss, they swipe, they dramatically flop on the floor when life gets too hard. And honestly? Maybe we should all be a little more like them. Instead of bottling up the chaos of the workweek, let's channel our inner feisty kitty and let it out - with humor, with sass, and maybe with some harmless side-eye at the printer that jammed for the third time.

Just a word of caution, though: cattitude is contagious. Once you start strutting around like you own the place (the way cats do in every place), it might spread across the office. Next thing you know, Karen from accounting is knocking pens off desks just because she can.

So let's lean in. End the week with claws out, whiskers twitching, and these funny cat memes that'll give you all the fiery feline energy you need to roar into the weekend.
